Job Summary: Oncology social workers provide psychosocial services to patients, families, and caregivers facing the impact of a cencer diagnosis. Oncology social workers are compassionate, empathetic, and are good listeners. They operate from a "Strengths Perspective" and build on those strengths to maximize optimal functioning. They are knowledgable about the psychosocial, emotional, and financial implications facing cancer patients. Oncology soical workers are knowledgeable about community and government resources and are able to access for the patient/family. They help facilitate patients' adjustment to cancer. Oncology social workers help patients navigate the healthcare system.
Minimum Requirements: The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed. Master's degree from a school of Social Work approved by the Council of Social Work Education. Two to three years of experience in a clinical setting dealing with families, hospitals, and community agencies. Prior experience working with cancer patients preferred. LCSW preferred. Have and maintain a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of North Carolina.
