Job Summary: The Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (DCES) is a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) who is responsible for managing, planning, clinical implementation, and the evaluation for care and educational activities that target all areas of the organization and community with special emphasis on Diabetes. The DCES works in direct care with all patient age groups, staff, and providers.

CarolinaEast Physicians is made up of over 150 physicians, and mid-level providers who provide care to patients spanning four eastern North Carolina Counties. We have specialties including Primary Care, Pediatrics, Rheumatology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Podiatry, Endocrinology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Otolaryngology, General Surgery, Oncology, Urology, Physical Medicine and Rehab, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, and Gastroenterology.

Minimum Requirements: 
•    Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Master’s Degree in health related field preferred.
•    Current RN licensure from North Carolina State Board of Nursing. Current certification as Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) by the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education or eligibility to become certified within 36 months of start based on current NCBDE requirements.
•    Minimum of five years’ clinical and/or three years’ teaching experience in an acute care hospital. Participation in continuing education programs (a minimum of 24 hours in the past 3 years).
•    Broad knowledge of new trends and techniques in health care.
•    Ability to think and plan independently and to work in an unstructured environment.
•    Skilled in using computerized information systems. Evidence of knowledge and ability to teach effectively and utilize the principles of adult education/child education.
•    Able to relate effectively to patients, their families, physicians, staff, and all others using proper channels of communication.
•    Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide direct patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.
